Shooting QR Codes: Best Practices

Overview

GotPhoto's QR code system is really helpful for keeping your photo jobs organized., so it's important to take your QR code pictures in a way that makes sure the system can read them easily. In this article, we'll review the key to shooting easily recognizable QR codes, as well as some common mistakes to avoid.

Shooting Guidelines

There are three key elements to taking a good QR code photo:

  1. The card should be flat.
  2. The photo should be evenly lit.
  3. The code should be in focus.

If you keep to these guidelines, your codes will be recognized by the GotPhoto system.

Some further things to keep in mind:

  • Size: The recognition is done on a 1200px scaled photo. The dots of the QR code still need to be recognizable with that image size. The code can even be as small as an edge length of 15% of the photo (2% of the image area).
Our recommendation is to shoot a close-up of the QR Card so you can still read names, access codes, and/or handwritten notes on each one.
  • Positioning: In order to make sure that the QR code is flat, we recommend using a clipboard.

If you are holding cards by hand, make sure not to backlight your cards!

Failed Recognition

Via our extensive testing process, we have narrowed down the most common mistakes that lead to non-recognition of QR codes:

Uneven exposure/shadows within the QR code
Bent/folded paper within the QR code

Light reflected in the black sections of the QR code

Not leaving a white border around the QR code
QR code is backlit
Wrong focus/motion blur

Small QR code with high JPG compression

The Takeaway

Maximize the effectiveness of GotPhoto's QR code system by adhering to essential shooting guidelines. Ensure your QR code photos are flat, evenly lit, and in focus to guarantee recognition within the GotPhoto system. By following these key tips and avoiding common mistakes, you'll enhance the accuracy and reliability of QR code recognition.
